Split into two discs, the title suggests the two sides of Harper's musical persona. The first disc ("White") is made of mostly acoustic and string-driven songs hinted at on the last track ("She's Only Happy in the Sun") of Harper's previous album Diamonds On the Inside .
Both Sides of the Gun is an 18-song collection, deliberately divided into two separate moods. The first half is reflective, featuring somber ballads and dream-like instrumental passages (“Sweet Nothing Serenade”) where vibes and his slide acoustic-guitar playing loosely gaze the day away.
