Whelan was born in Ealing, West London, UK, of Irish Roman Catholic parents. His childhood was spent both in London and Ireland (Kilkenny, Waterford and Dublin). After his training at Kingston Polytechnic College and the Royal Academy of Arts, he lived and worked for 30 years in various parts of Norfolk and Suffolk, England.
Brian Whelan is a painter, playwright and author who grew up in London and has lived in various countries. He is known for his religious and urban paintings, his books on Edith Cavell and the London-Irish diaspora, and his play A Tragic Comedy.
Whelan, who majored in music at USC, plays almost anything with keys or strings — steel guitar, accordion, piano. At the time, he was making the rounds in a number of Los Angeles bands and building a reputation as a formidable player on a number of instruments.
