October 2003. Portraiture has played a dominant role in England since the Renaissance, when the arts declaimed the legitimacy of the Tudor dynasty, while the Protestant Reformation effected a drastic decline in commissions for religious images.

"Out of Many: Portraits from 1600 to 1900" includes portraits of Indigenous Americans, European colonists, clergymen, soldiers, writers, performers, scientists, and others who helped shape the country. Portraiture—particularly before the advent of photography in 1839—reflects the reality of unequal economic and social structures.
Portrait of a Man. Anthony van Dyck Flemish. ca. 1618. Not on view. This impressive portrait, painted about 1618 when the artist was eighteen or nineteen years old, is very close in style to contemporary and slightly earlier portraits by Rubens, for whom Van Dyck was working at the time.
