The band was formed in 1979 originally as TV Art by Paul Haig (vocals, guitar) and his childhood friend Ronnie Torrance (drums), later joined by Malcolm Ross (guitar, keyboards), with Gary McCormack added on bass guitar, who soon left (later joining The Exploited) with David Weddell replacing him.
By the time David Weddell took over on bass at the beginning of 1979 the nascent group were gigging regularly, complementing a thriving local scene that also included The Associates, Fire Engines, Scars, Metropak, Visitors and Another Pretty Face.
Josef K were formed in Edinburgh in 1979, originally as TV Art, by Paul Haig (guitar/vocals), Ronnie Torrance (drums), Malcolm Ross (guitar/vocals/violin/keyboards) and their ex-roadie David Weddell (bass) replacing original bassist Gary McCormack.

Josef K were formed in 1979 out of the remnants of another Edinburgh outfit TV Art by Haig (guitar, vocals); Malcolm Ross (guitar ); David Weddell (bass) and Ronnie Torrance (drums). Their debut single, 'Chance Meeting', was released on one-off label Absolute in November of that year.
28 de oct. de 2005 · A chance meeting with Orange Juice drummer Steven Daly lead to an alliance between the bands and they began playing out together. After Daly set up his own label, Absolute, Chance Meeting by Josef K became its first (and only) release. Then they signed to Orange Juice singer Edwyn Collins' Postcard Records.
