How are the 10,000 Maniacs without Natalie Merchant? Surprisingly decent. This was always a band that rested their appeal on strong vocals and competent musicianship more than clever lyrics or deep ideas, so carrying on without a vocalist as strong as Natalie Merchant--but retaining her so-so lyrics--was a dicey move.
