The Talented Mr. Ripley Summary. Tom Ripley is a secretive, troubled young man in New York. He makes his living by scamming elderly people and artists, but lies to his group of friends, fabricating careers and talents in order to seem accomplished. He has many acquaintances but no close friends, and his parents have been dead since he was young.
Plot. In 1958 New York City, Tom Ripley is approached by shipbuilding magnate Herbert Greenleaf, who believes that Ripley attended Princeton with his son Dickie. Greenleaf pays Ripley $1,000 to travel to Italy, where Dickie has settled, and persuade him to return to the United States.
Though trusted by Dickie's father, Ripley is disquieted when Mr. Greenleaf hires American private detective Alvin MacCarron to investigate Dickie's disappearance. Marge suspects Ripley's involvement in Dickie's death and confronts him after finding Dickie's rings in Ripley's bathroom.
The Talented Mr. Ripley is a 1955 psychological thriller novel by Patricia Highsmith. The novel introduced the character of con man Tom Ripley, whom Highsmith wrote about in four subsequent books.
