They were situated at the entrance to a wide lake called Nen Hithoel, at the opposite end of which were the Falls of Rauros. They marked what was at one point the northern border of Gondor.

  2. 8 de jun. de 2004 · The Argonath itself was built to mark the northern bounds of Gondor - but over 1000 years after the passing of Anarion, Elendil, and Isildur (and almost 2000 years before the action in LOTR). They were built under Minalcar of Gondor, during his years as Regent (1240-1304 TA) for first his uncle then his father, sometime after 1248, before he succeeded to the throne as Romendacil II.

After he says the line "My friends, you bow to no one," the camera pulls back so that you can see all of the "courtyard." The hobbits are standing on a raised dias, or something.
