On 11 March 1201 Grimsby’s most historic document ordained that ‘the good men of Grimsby should be governed by a mayor’. From then on Grimsby had its own court and its own local government. By 1218 Grimsby had a mayor. During the 12 th century it developed into a fishing and trading port.
