The Peterhouse School of History, named after the college of the same name at the University of Cambridge, focused on the study of "high politics" in history. Maurice Cowling , the most prominent member of the Peterhouse school, described this as consisting of the "fifty or sixty politicians in conscious tension with one another".
Peterhouse has a strong tradition in Engineering, with notable alumni including Babbage, Kelvin, Whittle and Cockerell. Although undergraduate work is centred around the University Engineering Department, which is next door to Peterhouse on Trumpington Street, College teaching is also significant.
Peterhouse is the oldest of the Cambridge colleges, founded by Hugo de Balsham, Bishop of Ely in 1284 and granted its charter by Edward I. As a charitable institution dedicated to education and research, the College has survived the Reformation, Civil War and the upheavals of every century since.
