Black Uhuru is a Jamaican reggae group formed in 1972, initially as Uhuru ( Swahili for 'freedom'). The group has undergone several line-up changes over the years, with Derrick "Duckie" Simpson as the mainstay.
The roots of Black Uhuru formed in Kingston’s “Waterhouse” District in the late 60’s. It is the home of founder & leader Derrick “Duckie” Simpson along with all the rest of the singers from the group. The original Uhuru’s Swahili for “freedom” were Duckie, Don Carlos & Garth Dennis.
Sus miembros iniciales fueron Ervin «Don Carlos» Spencer, Rudolph «Garth» Dennis, y Derrick «Duckie» Simpson. Primera Separación y Reorganización. Cuando la banda experimentó dificultades para asegurar un contrato, Spencer se apartó para seguir una carrera como solista, y Dennis se unió a The Wailing Souls.
