A division of the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, the OHP has traffic enforcement jurisdiction throughout the state. OHP was legislatively created on July 1, 1937, due to the growing problem of motor vehicle collisions, the expansion of highway systems, and the increase in criminal activities.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has a rich heritage of proudly protecting Oklahomans since 1937. Governor E.W. Marland convinced the state legislature to create the Oklahoma Highway Patrol that year.
History. The Department of Public Safety traces its history almost as far back as statehood. In 1912, there were only sixty-five hundred automobiles in the entire state. But by 1929, over 600,000 vehicles were being driven up and down state roads.
