26 de sept. de 2024 · Though especially abundant in polar seas, seals are found throughout the world, with some species favouring the open ocean and others inhabiting coastal waters or spending time on islands, shores, or ice floes.
Seals inhabit a variety of habitats, including deep sea environments. There are approximately 33 species of seals that live in the world’s oceans today, with an estimated 6 million individuals worldwide. Deep sea seals inhabit areas where depths exceed 200m and temperatures range from 0-10°C.
Seals are found along most coasts and cold waters, but a majority of them live in the Arctic and Antarctic waters. Harbor, ringed, ribbon, spotted and bearded seals, as well as northern fur seals and Steller sea lions live in the Arctic region.

Seals, compared to their Sea lion cousins, mostly live in Polar ocean regions around the Arctic and Antarctic, like the Harp and Leopard Seals. There are species, like the Monk Seal, who do not live in the cold polar regions and tend to live in the warm waters closer to the equators around the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Hawaii.
The most widely distributed species of pinniped (walruses, eared seals, and true seals), they are found in coastal waters of the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Baltic and North seas. Harbor seals are brown, silvery white, tan, or gray, with distinctive V-shaped nostrils.
