The initial mandate for the final (at the time Mk5) War Machine suit in Endgame was a bulked-out suit with heavy anime-style boosters for an anticipated final battle in space.

Iron Man (2007) - Early War Machine concepts. In one of the earliest scripts for the original Iron Man, the "Mandarin" was going to be a descendent of Ghengis Khan who was trying to establish a new empire in a fictional "-stan" country, funded by his massive oil reserves.
This was the initial concept that got selected for War Machine Mk IV. Originally, Rhodey would have sported two different suits in the movie, and I took this design and the Mk V suit all the way to a finished ZBrush sculpt before the two were ultimately combined into one.
War Machine’s armor is supposed to be heavier and bulkier than Iron Man’s, not not a mini transformer like we saw in Endgame. Honestly most of these concept arts looks MUCH better then the final design. 274 votes, 10 comments. 3.4M subscribers in the marvelstudios community.
