The four cardinal directions, or cardinal points, are the four main compass directions: north, south, east, and west, commonly denoted by their initials N, S, E, and W respectively. Relative to north, the directions east, south, and west are at 90 degree intervals in the clockwise direction.

North, South, East and West - Usage. Each of the points of the compass ( north, south, east, west, south-east, north-west etc) can be: noun - The sun rises in the east. adjective - It is sunny on the east coast. adverb - We drove east for 50 miles.
Which way is north? You know the sun rises in the east and sets in the west so when you face towards east your left hand tell you north and on your right side is south. If you are in the Southern Hemisphere then it will be the other way round.
